Extended World Traveler to be, Emma Thompson, in one of our (especially our daughters) favourite movies “Sense and Sensibility”
This is the headline of an article someone just sent me. I was really thrilled to see that Ms Thompson obviously follows our blog and has read our recent post “Why do kids need school when they can travel” and quickly taken some action on that (you can always dream) 
I’m sure the family will have a great time together during their traveling year. And I’m convinced that Gaia, the daughter, will learn loads of things (well, the parents too of course) that’ll benefit her for the rest of her life.
As we have mentioned over and over again, first hand experiences of the world give kids knowledge they can never acquire in a class room. When you see different places with your own eyes, hear sounds with your own ears, experience wonderful (and less wonderful) smells with your own nose, things become a part of you in ways that you never come close to, reading about them in books.
Not to mention all the meetings with different people that take place when you’re out there, traveling the world. People from other cultures, religions, colours, with other political views and who live under totally different circumstances than your own.
Obviously, and sadly, the “National Association of Head Teachers spokesman” who’s quoted in the article, doesn’t have much experience from traveling with kids. Nor does he/she seem to be very informed about how children really learn. It’s good to be aware of, that as a potential long term traveling parent, you can be met with remarkable ignorance from school officials. I assure you though, that when you’re away on your trip, and see how your child is developing and learning and thriving, you’ll know you’ve done the right thing!

That’s obviously what old people regret most of all, the chances they had but didn’t take. Few people regret the things they did do!
Gap year are no longer only for young,Growing numbers of older workers are taking break and enjoying some traveling after redundancy or before a career change. Many people find that it helps with their self confidence, assertiveness and also helps develop personal skills, depending what they do with their time.
Once you start working or resume studying it is difficult to take time out for yourself.

Learning from traveling enables you to apply what you’ve learned in school. Sometimes you are not aware that you are actually learning new things out of traveling but after that you’ll realized. Moreover, traveling is an opportunity to meet other people, know and learn their culture and heritage.
Hats off to you on making travel a priority!
Our daughter and son both spent significant amounts of time traveling and following their interests prior to college. Everyone benefits… the student, the school and the parents. Being a believer in democracy, I think society benefits as well, by having a more aware and thoughtful individual to contribute while questioning existing political frameworks.

You can learn a lot from traveling and at the same time enjoying it. Traveling gives you the opportunity to know other people, to see who they are, what are their cultures, etc.
I absolutely agree. When traveling you can learn more things and discover new things that you might not know before and this is the exciting part. For me traveling is one of the best thing to do to train your children to be more creative, appreciative and responsible.

when i was young we were constantly traveling around the world and this benifited me as an adult because ive been exposed to so many different cultures it made me a people person as well as very accepting of people
travel is a sence of independence and a means of exploring the world though new eyes im all for travel because it in itself is a learning journey it also lets us get the freedom to dicover new cultures and life!

Yes, that’s exactly what we want people to realise, and it’s not easy to see this when you just sit at home. It takes that first step though – to get out there – and then…… You never know where it’ll end…..
I have 4 children on my own and although they learn a lot from the places we travel to school or at least home schooling is just as essential. We may learn more from the outside world and life experiences but the fundamentals we learn at school and the 9-5 routine we become accustomed to is an essential part of growing up.
