Want to get out of your comfort zone, overcome fears and be a world traveler?
Thousands, maybe even millions, of people dream about being a world traveler. Often though, it just stays as a dream. Could it be so that it requires something to overcome fears and take us out of our comfort zone and take the leap and really do it?

When you try to get out of your comfort zone your roadblocks may seem overwhelmingly big, but remember, there are always ways to pass them
Have we been totally comfortable every time when we’ve been on our way to leave for a trip? Definitely not! There’s this first stage of excitement and anticipation, when we’re happily planning our next adventure and use all our time to get things into places. Then, the closer the departure, the more excited we get, but also the more “the buts” turn up. What we’ve also noticed, every time, is that just before we leave we start to appreciate our home a lot: “Aren’t things good as they are? Why don’t we just forget about this and stay home this time?”, “should we really leave everything for such a long time and now when we also have kittens” or ”when the apple trees are blooming?” or “shouldn’t we really stay here and renovate the kitchen instead?” (and these may seem like small buts, but I can assure you, they have been accompanied by loads of much bigger ones).
Travel with kids – challenge or opportunity – part 2
A while ago I wrote about “Travel with kids – challenge or opportunity” and since this is an area that’s dear to my heart, here’s some more.

To travel with kids is a lot of fun. You can take the opportunity to practice being a bit less serious for example
Why am I so eager to convince you to take your kids on that dream trip of yours? Because it’s so worth it! For the kids and for you. I’m of course not talking about that short get away weekend by yourself or with your spouse. I’m talking about going traveling and traveling for a long time. When you travel with kids and go out into the world, there are a few things which could be good to have in mind though:
School is probably the most common reason that stops families from doing long term travel
A while ago we asked the question why is families that do long term travel so uncommon? Judging from the feedback we got, school and money are definitely the most common reasons that stand in the way. Well , for most people money is usually the most popular reason but when it comes to families , then school is just as important.
This hasn’t been the case for us since we have homeschooled most of the time even when we haven’t been traveling but we can very well understand the worries that may arise since we ran into the same kind of concerns when we started homeschooling our children. Could we do it? Would they learn anything? How about friends? And on and on… Not to mentioned how family, friends and even authorities here in Sweden were questioning our decision.
Rosie Swale-Pope chose a slightly different way to travel around the world – by running!
Last week, we wrote about Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman, who chose to travel around the world on their motorbikes. We’ve watched the DVDs from their trip several times and it seems like an amazing adventure with some amazing challenges as well![]()
Well, now our friend Gabi (who by the way is an avid traveler herself as well as a fantastic photographer: www.5reicherts.com ) just told me about this book she’s reading. It’s about Rosie Swan-Pope who made the same trip as Ewan and Charlie, but not on a motorbike though. Rosies way to take herself around the world was by running!
Paulo Coelho and his advice on how to travel
The other day we wrote about why travel is good for you and your brain based on scientific studies. Today though, I want to tell you about one of my favorite authors and his view on how to travel. This is rather different from the scientific approach though and much more about personal opinions.
The author is Paulo Coelho and to me he is definitive a great author. I always enjoy reading his books. They are easy to read, usually surprise me and inspire me to not always believe my first impression. He often has a nice twist on things. And the books do make me feel good. So it was nice when, earlier today, I was reminded of his advice on how to travel .
Go on vacation, take a career break, quit your job, whichever way you do it, giving your brain some time off by taking the time to travel can actually save your life!
You probably know by now that we’re firm believers that traveling is good for you. That taking some time to travel can be the best investment you’ve ever made. Well, now I found an article which really supports this idea. Just listen to this for example: “A proper vacation can light up higher order brain function that a year of pernicious stress has dimmed and debilitated”!
The article is called “Want your brain to make you brilliant? Give it a vacation” and is written by Don Joseph Goewey, someone I have been following for a while. He’s a man who has been working with people in stressful situations, and I mean really stressful situations. Like people faced with serious illnesses, parents who have lost children, life sentencened prisoners and war refugees. Most recently though, he has been focusing on people overwhelmed by the demands of work and family, a situation I guess many of you are familiar with.
Why travel? Meet Derek, who traveled the world with his wife on their honeymoon – which lasted a whole year!
Three days after their wedding, Derek and Shanna set of on their one year long honeymoon. During that year, they visited 40 different countries in Asia, South America, Africa and Europe.
They also started their blog, www.oneyearonearth.com which is really packed with inspiring information and answers to the question why travel, so check it out. Be prepared though, you might want to take out your suitcases and start packing! They’re back in the USA now since some time, and we asked Derek a couple of questions.
“Long Way Round” a real travel adventure with Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman
The other day we decided to watch “Long Way Round” with Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman again. For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, this is a TV documentary of Ewan’s and Charley’s journey from London to New York on motorbikes. As the title suggests, they took the long way by setting off through Europe and then heading east through Russia and Asia all the way to Bering Strait where they would fly the motorbikes to Alaska. Mounting their bikes again in Anchorage they would then ride them across the American continent to New York.
First of all let me say that I do enjoy watching the DVD’s although this is probably something I would never undertake myself. But that goes for a lot of things I guess
